P.S. I Love You

The film, "P.S. I Love You" starring Hilary Swank (Holly)and the incredibly hot Gerard Butler (Gerry) was surprisingly good. I went with my mother and sister and fully intended to sleep through the whole thing. I cried through the whole thing instead.
My mother was surprised by how many young men were there - with their dates or whatever. I was concerned with the film itself.

Holly and Gerry have been married for ten years. You can see at the beginning of the film what their relationship was like: happy, good, tense, stressful, full of fights.

Then, Gerry dies of a brain tumor. Since he saw it coming, he saw a way to help the wife he loved dearly, the wife who was his best friend, and who he knows better than anyone. Before he died, he wrote his wife several letters, and arranged various... things so that after he died, she would have some help in the grieving process. All of his letters end with. "P.S. I love you"

Holly's mother, Patricia (Kathy Bates), never liked Gerry. He was older than Holly by about 5 years, and they married young, and he never had a job she felt was any good. She especially hates when Holly goes with her two girlfriends, Denise (Lisa Kudrow) and Sharon (Gina Gershon)to visit Ireland: his homeland and where they'd met; because he set up a trip for her before she left.

This romantic comedy is amazing. It's funny and sweet and sad. It's a truly wonderful tale.

And, just in case you're curious, my favorite part happens in Ireland. There's just something about men w an accent that makes me melt...

Curious About the Jamie Lynn Spears Pregnancy

I understand all the buzz about Jamie Lynn Spears. I mean, she's a 16-year-old celebrity who is pregnant. Personally, I'm really proud of her for deciding to keep the baby. That takes guts. No matter who you are or who your parents/family members are.

Here's what I don't understand: why are people calling her a whore? Why are people calling her a slut? What exactly is the problem?

Our society promotes sexuality and "everyone" is having premarital sex. In fact,we glorify it with TV shows like "Tila Tequila" (which is having a second season, evidently). Sex is everywhere. Sex can eventually lead to pregnancy - protected or not. So how can we live in a culture where everyone is having sex, and everyone is promoting sex, and then call a 16-year-old girl, who is a product of that culture, a slut/whore? Or for that matter, how can we even be surprised?

What exactly is the problem? Is it that she had premarital sex? Obviously, that would be ridiculous. I blog for a pop culture blog (www.popsofa.com), and new stars are getting pregnant/having a baby every day, almost literally. Jessica Alba and Nicole Richie aren't married - and to the best of my knowledge, no one has called either of them sluts.

Is it her age? Because she's a teenager? When, then, is the right age to have sex? 18, when you're out of high school? 20, with a college fling? 22, when you're out of college with a degree? 24? 26?

Please, someone: enlighten me.

Will Smith In "I Am Legend"

I Am Legend was interesting. And I Am Legend was horrifying. Similar to medical history - interesting and horrifying. We "cure" a disease only for it to become worse, or for a worse strain to develop, or for something worse to come along. Will Smith brought this to light for me in a way I never thought imaginable.

That is the premise of I Am Legend. Here, the disease cured was cancer. Three years later, the film takes place. Will Smith plays Dr. Robert Neville, who is immune to the virus which presumably developed from the cured Cancer. (My roommate told me a few minutes ago that the film is based on a book. I'll have to read that.)

I won't ruin the story here, but what I will tell you is this: it's good. It made me jump. The characters - dog, man, monsters, etc. were created in a fascinating manner. They seemed horribly real - and terribly believable.

One of the best and worst parts of the movie was this: Robert Neville set up a trap for the monsters. (The monsters are vicious, pale, hairless, have dialated eyes and are "allergic" to sunlight.) He catches the monsters to test them with different combinations of his own blood to find a cure.

The next day, one of the mannequins Robert has dressed up and set around the city, whom he's named Fred, is not where he's been for the last 1000ish days. When he goes to inspect it, he's caught in a trap the monsters set up for him.

At the very end, Legend had a flashback-type thing to Signs, where there was a reason for something his little girl said at the beginning of the movie.

If you go see it, tell me if you see a slab of meat hanging from the window near the end of the film... it's red and dripping blood, after the scene where the monsters set the trap for him. I thought I saw something of that nature, but The Boy says he doesn't know what I'm talking about.

All in all, I thought the film was excellent, even if it wound my nerves into a tight little ball. What'd you think?

A Shot at Love With Tila Tequila

Have you seen the television show A Shot At Love With Tila Tequila? I haven't. I've read reviews, and talked to my friend who loves the show. That was enough for me to know I hated it.

But, something interesting was published by Fox News a few weeks ago. I have no idea if it's true or not... I'd like to say yes, but there's just no way to say for sure.

Supposedly, the whole shows a sham (It's kinda like The Hills - is it real, or isn't it?), and not only is Tila Tequila (aka Tila Nguyen) supposedly completely straight, but she also has a boyfriend, and is a nightmare to work with. "She arrives late and doesn't talk to any of the contestants between takes. She complains she has too much going on." So says a "source close to the show." Basically, it could mean anything.

Her rep says otherwise, "I'll confirm that she's bisexual and a delight to work with." Interesting.

If you look at Tila's myspace page (myspace.com/tilatequila) you'll see that Tila claimed last Wednesday that she hates watching her show. Why? Because it makes her cry.

Tila also says she wishes she could date multiple contestants, which really confuses me, because this is a dating show... isn't it? So she's already dated/dating multiple contestants. I mean the bachelor... he's dating all those girls. You can date more than one person at a time... and that's what you're doing. You can't be serious about more than one person at a time... THAT'S not healthy.

Not a fan of this show, but others seem to be. If I understand correctly, there's one girl and one guy left - Dani and Bobby or something - is that true?

Last episode airs Tuesday, December 18, 2007 at 10pm on MTV. So, I guess the big question is: who's she going to choose? I'm sure my friend will tell me. Or someone will.

Side note: she is gorgeous, and my boyfriend is not allowed to discover this show. Ever.

The Golden Compass: Too Hyped Up, and Totally Not Worth It

Last night, I went to see "The Golden Compass." It was disappointing, to say the least. It would have been disappointing even without all the hype, but the hype surrounding it helped build it up some in my mind, and it fell far far far short of expectations.

Nicole Kidman (Mrs. Coulter) did the only decent acting in the whole thing (except for Daniel Craig (Lord Asriel), but he had only a small role). Everyone else sounded like they were reading from a script. I'm not joking.

It was also sloooooooooooooooow. Tenish minutes into the movie, my boyfriend nudged me and said, "Forgive me if I fall asleep."
"That bad, huh?"
"Forgive me if I fall asleep."
He took a pretty good nap, waking up in time for the bear fight scene, which was one of two decent scenes in the film. The other was the battle at the end of the film.

However, even the second battle was disappointing as it was over-animated. The CGI animations were over-the-top -- to the extent that it made the film unenjoyable. I think the problem was more that things that didn't need to be computer generated, were.

On a plus side, the bears (Loreks) were wonderful. They looked real, and they did a great job on them. And, as previously mentioned, the fight scene was amazing, enjoyable and surprisingly believable.

I was really excited about the movie, and I love fantasy stories in general, and the books were great when I read them years ago. I really wish the goodness of the book had translated over to the movies.

Needless to say, I say wait until it's out on DVD. Or better yet, wait until you can check it out for free at the library.

This Week On Scrubs: "My Number One Doctor"

I love the television show Scrubs. JD's complete lack of knowledge when it comes to anything manly - and his therefore complete dependence on Turk - makes me laugh. Like checking to see if men really do compete in everything. Turk's half head nod made me happy, but really: how does JD not know that? I know that, and I'm not a guy!

"He's out of his frickin' mind!" I love Carla... there's just something about her that makes me smile. She has the perfect mix of sarcasm and psychotic-ness that makes me completely happy. She also knows everyone's weaknesses - and she uses them. Amazing.

And Elliot... so pretty, so sweet. She reminds me a lot of my sister in that respect. She also has an absolutely amazing sense of humor. I also feel bad for her, though, because she expects other people to want the same things she does, and they don't always. Like in today's episode, she was trying to get a patient to understand how careful she has to be with her medications.

"Because taking too much of this (insert long name that I don't know), you can recover from, but if you had taken too much of this (insert another long name), you could have died."
"That's good to know," says Shannon the patient, "I'll be sure to do that next time." Ouch.

Classic moment: Just as I was asking aloud, "WHAT is she wearing - what are they wearing?" About Janitor and his girlfriend, Lady (her parents were watching Lady and the Tramp...), Carla asked the same reason. One more thing I love about her. She's always in everyone's business. It's hilarious.

At the end of the episode, Elliot decided not to to tell her patient's nurse about her wanting to commit suicide. What do you think? Do you think she should have?

Enchanted

I was so excited to see this film, and even after seeing it, I'm still glad we (Melody and I) went to see it. It was incredibly adorable, and Patrick Dempsey (Robert) and Amy Adams (Giselle) put on a stellar performance.

I loved the fairy tale aspect of the stories. Granted, I do like fairy tales, so that was part of the attraction. The whole "I met my true love and we're getting married a day later" I think is incredibly romantic. Unrealistic, but romantic.

In the movie, there's a part where Giselle and Prince Edward are walking together, once they're both in New York City and have found one another, and they have nothing to say. Giselle has requested a date, and the incredibly self-centered Prince is only set on marrying her.

In some ways, I suppose his one-tract mind is sweet, in other ways, I kinda wanted to scream at him.

All in all, I thought the movie was adorable, that the ending was very "Happily Ever After" albeit predictable, and that it was well worth my time - and my $7,50. And I love that she made a dress from the curtains.
