Charlie Wilson's War

Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts amazed me in this film; both their performances were more than stellar. Amy Adams (Enchanted) was also in this film as the assistant to Tom Hanks as Charlie Wilson, a Texas congressman. Tom and Julia did an amazing job.

This is based on a true story, based on Charlie Wilson, a congressman who adored women (sexist) and did other questionable things in his private life. His office looked a little bit like playboy mansion, with hot women, and I quote, "You can teach them to type, but you can't teach them to grow tits."

He also helped rebel Afghans in their attempt to overthrow the Soviet Union during the cold war, "singlehandedly winning the cold war." Obviously, since it was a cold war (covert war), it was on the DL... technically... that Charlie was using American money and supplies to aid Afghanistan shoot down the helicopters that were killing the people and destroying the towns.

Then, just as the war was over, we pulled out. We didn't help the people who were injured with health care. We didn't provide education to the remaining population, the majority of which was under 14. Should we have?

How did our pulling out when we did affect the future? Is that part of the reason for what's going on now?

Enchanted

I was so excited to see this film, and even after seeing it, I'm still glad we (Melody and I) went to see it. It was incredibly adorable, and Patrick Dempsey (Robert) and Amy Adams (Giselle) put on a stellar performance.

I loved the fairy tale aspect of the stories. Granted, I do like fairy tales, so that was part of the attraction. The whole "I met my true love and we're getting married a day later" I think is incredibly romantic. Unrealistic, but romantic.

In the movie, there's a part where Giselle and Prince Edward are walking together, once they're both in New York City and have found one another, and they have nothing to say. Giselle has requested a date, and the incredibly self-centered Prince is only set on marrying her.

In some ways, I suppose his one-tract mind is sweet, in other ways, I kinda wanted to scream at him.

All in all, I thought the movie was adorable, that the ending was very "Happily Ever After" albeit predictable, and that it was well worth my time - and my $7,50. And I love that she made a dress from the curtains.
